PUBLIC WASHHOUSE, MASSALAVÉS
Description
The Massalavés washhouse is a building from the 1950s. It is located in the Xorret district, east of the town of Massalaves, near the old “Cami Reial”.
Construction: its base consists of linked semicircular arches, upon which three main pillars rise, followed by nine secondary wooden pillars on each side and three central columns. Gabled roof with wooden beams. The washhouse is constructed of stone and lime mortar.
The municipal washhouse in Massalavés has two washing basins covered with flagstones about 40 centimeters thick. The washhouse water came from the Racó irrigation ditch, entering through a siphon into the first basin, where the women rinsed their clothes before washing them. The water then flowed into the Alfai irrigation ditch.
The Massalavés Washhouse is in excellent condition thanks to recent renovations. It is located amidst a landscape of horticultural land, mostly persimmon orchards, an area that was previously used for citrus groves and, before that, rice paddies. The center of the village of Massalavés is very close, as are the Town Hall and the interesting Milà Tower, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries.
