LAS FALLAS
Description
The Fallas festival, celebrated in honor of Saint Joseph (March 19) and coinciding with the transition from winter to spring, has been recognized since 2016 as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The main subjet are the temporary artistic monuments created by the Fallas artists and burned on the night of March 19th, which are complemented by musical traditions, pyrotechnics, with mascletàs, firework displays or despertás, and cultural events.
In the Ribera region, 80% of the municipalities have at least one Fallas committee, and the tradition is over 100 years old in towns like Alzira, which boasts a significant number of Fallas participants. In 2026, the city had 34 committees and some 8,600 Fallas members out of a population of approximately 45,000.
