MUNICIPAL WASHOUSE. Font de la Carrasca. Benifaió
Description
The Font de la Carrasca washhouse, Benifaió. Inaugurated in 1925. Built around a natural lagoon, which provided water to the population, over the Raval irrigation ditch, which led towards the Marjal and irrigated the lowlands of Benifaió and Almussafes.
The building has a gabled roof over the laundry chute. It has slabs for washing clothes. Oval enclosure.
Downstream there was another raft for washing animals and clothes of the sick or deceased, among other things.
Washhouses were social centers, mainly for the female population. They fell into disuse with the generalization of drinking water in homes and washing machines.
The washhouse was restored in 2016 and is a public place, where the so-called duck festival or water fight is celebrated during the town’s festivities.
